Eat Well and Enjoy Heart Health

Marlon Jackson

Health and wellness begins with the food you put into your body. For many in this country, losing weight is a necessary goal that often starts with struggle. Once you know the right foods to eat, you can begin your journey to better living.

When it comes to healthy diet tips, there’s one tip that is best to always remember: natural is the way to go. The best foods are the ones that had the least steps from nature to your plate. When you eat unprocessed fruits and veggies, you help your body get rid of free radicals that can damage your blood vessels and heart. Most people regularly eat apples, bananas and oranges, but sometimes you need some delicious variety. Papaya has beta-carotene, Vitamins C and E and more; it’s great for smoothies, a fresh salsa or by itself. Acorn squash has B-complex and C vitamins, and spinach is very healthful. In fact, baked squash served with sauteed spinach can make a great dish. Even if you’re a meat eater, vegetarian cooking websites can be a great source for new and interesting recipes for fruits and vegetables.

The next step is meat and protein. Often the negative aspects of meat and fish are reported more than the positives. The truth is that there are numerous protein options that are actually good for you. Be sure to look for omega-3 fatty acids. These are good fats that are abundant in fish like salmon and tuna. In fact, black and kidney beans are good sources of these fats, and almonds and walnuts have plenty of plant omega-3’s. Adding whole grains to these protein sources is a great way to consume vital heart-healthy nutrients.

Lastly, you have permission to treat yourself. You read that correctly; you should treat yourself. Consider foods like genuine dark chocolate and fine red wine. Both have flavonoids, which can improve good cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Eating "bad" is generally okay as long as you don't eat them often and enjoy in moderation. Part of a healthy attitude about food is to allow yourself to enjoy it rather than obsess over it.

When you incorporate small changes into all aspects of your life, it's less challenging to start and maintain a healthy diet. It's most important to enjoy exercise, a well-balanced diet and hobbies that enrich your life.
